1. Must have jesus phone 2.0
  2. Actual cost is as such for 8gb : $199 + $30(24 Month minimum)= $919-that is not bad!
  3. I love the GPS-A capability. It seems like it would be a lot more reliable in a city environment than plain satellite based GPS as I have found. (GPS-A uses GPS + WiFi +  Cell Phone Tower Triangulation )
  4. 3g seems like it’s a dream
  5. So many new awesome Apps and Games
  6. Looks like I’ve been swept up in the iphone-mania

Hmm, what’s this? Smells like a fanboy. Give it some time and it’ll soon morph into an apologist, we must stop it now!

But seriously. Yeah I think the iPhone is neat but I have a deep seated hatred towards any telecom when handling data plans. Such events as the classic Verizon .002 cents = .002 dollars (http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/verizon-doesnt-know-dollars-from-cents.html) has taught me that if I really want to text my friends or browse the internet, it would be better just to carry around a laptop and stop at one of the countless places that have free wi-fi rather than bother with a data plan.

Some more stuff, telecoms gouge consumers with texting (http://www.physorg.com/news129793047.html), charge you for leaving their service, and still charge for long-distance even though the system is now entirely automatic and the payment is just a tradition held from back in the day of switchboard operators.

Skype is an interesting option for home use, but until there is nation-wide WiMax (like that will ever happen, ha ha ha) you would still have to carry around a cell phone in case of emergency.

Though I’ve been thinking about that recently, people in the 80’s and early 90’s seemed to fare just as well as we do in emergency situations and all they had were payphones. Currently I don’t pay for my phone service (long live suburbia), but soon I will have to and I’ve been debating about whether or not I need a cell phone at all. For all the years I’ve had it my phone has always just been a clock that occasionally calls people (Mitch Hedberg reference) and really I don’t need to be paying monthly for that. I guess I’ll burn that bridge when I get there.

This is probably chock-full of grammar and spelling errors but I’m not going to scroll through this small box to check.

Hey Scott. Nice to see someone christen my blog with its first comment, albeit by someone I know in real life that isn’t an impressive person :P.

Anyway, aren’t we an old grumpy man?

See, I’m not using my iphone just as a cellphone. I need it for that portable web browsing experience and stuff…

I’m not an apologist and I don’t even own a piece of apple property..besides my ipod.

My points still stand, no matter how unimpressive I am. I was actually just looking on the Skype website and their plans look a lot better since I last saw them a few years ago. The 3 Skypephone is especially interesting as it uses cell networks to make calls, but it is only available overseas and there’s no plans to bring it to America.

As for the portable web browsing, UMPCs are getting fairly cheap nowadays and as long as you stay in the city wi-fi is pretty ubiquitous. I mean, yeah, I’d like to be able to check my RSS feed and further isolate myself from society while on a bus or in a park but I’m not entirely sure it’s a healthy thing to do. My Dad is a full-blown Crackberry addict and let me tell you, constant access to the internet is one hell of a drug.

Also, those who deny fanboyism only enforce the image. (i.e., “I’m not a fanboy but the 360 totally wails on the PS3 in every aspect of everything.”

On this note, have you seen icall for the iphone? It’s a third party app that’ll let you switch to voip while mid-conversation without any interruptions if you’re in an area with WiFi.

The monthly plan is only $30 in America??

In the UK, it’s £30 (~$60) at cheapest, and even then, you would choose the £35 option because the £30 gives you next to no minutes or texts.

I want one as well, but the cost for me to get it for 2 years would be $1879. Less reasonable. :(

(PS - Love the blog design!)

    Hi,

My opinion may not count for much but being a lifetime apple user, I cannot and will not endorse the jesusphone. Apple has made a mockery of people who “must-have” the latest technology despite it’s true benefits to the “consumer”. The iPhone was released as a beta and everyone bought the darn thing knowing full well the bloated costs and limitations. As long as you are willing to bite, they will hook you line and sinker every time.

Another interesting thought to chew is the left over bandwidth that will be up for grabs when analog TV in the US is dropped. There is talk how this would allow xtremely fast FREE wifi FOR FREE everywhere if given to the right people.

However, corporations are freaking out and amassing lobbyists to stop this so they can continue there OLD WAYS of charging you for services that should be free. You think that corporations are gonna be happy that people can watch TV for free on the internet. You think that broadcast companies are gonna really let us have free reign to put our own stuff on the airways? Nope. This is about controlling the technology so they can keep making a buck passing off crapola the way TV networks are doing right now.

I don’t own a cellphone anymore. I talk to people personally or on the computer or regular phone. Seems to still work for me.

Sorry for the ramble. The site is nice.

Ouch! Kinda expensive in your countries guys…

Here in Romania I got my iPhone like 3-4 months ago for 400 euro (including a nice leather case for it+ screen protection sticker), and can use it with ANY operator I want…we have Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile soon (I use it in Vodafone)

Sooo…besides the fact that I’m going to get matches when I sell it (new version will cost ~200 euro here), I’m very happy & I got away cheap :D

    cheers mates!

Michael Martin mentioned the US $30 per month charge….that of course is only the data cost, does not include your phone plan.

I will be purchasing the phone soon (already have the verion 1.0) and will be developing some applications. I do wish they had included a video cam (or did they….seems to be an urban legend). Also am nervous about assisted GPS…..will it function if you do not have cell service available?
